Why Fall Is the Best Season for IPL and Chemical Peels

By the time the leaves start turning, summer has usually left a few souvenirs on your skin. New brown spots on your cheeks or hands. Freckles that joined together. Redness that never quite settled down. A dull, rough texture that no moisturizer seems to fix.

The good news is that fall is the best time of year to do something about it. At our SE Calgary clinic on Macleod Trail, two of our favourite treatments for post-summer skin are Lumecca IPL and AlumierMD chemical peels. Both work best when your skin is spending less time in the sun. Here's why timing matters, and how we plan a series that has you ready for spring.

Why the sun and these treatments don't mix

Both IPL and chemical peels work by deliberately prompting your skin to renew itself. That's what makes them effective. It's also why sun exposure around your treatments matters so much.

  • IPL targets pigment. Lumecca delivers pulses of light that are absorbed by melanin (the brown pigment in sunspots) and by the hemoglobin in small surface blood vessels. When your skin is tanned, there is more pigment throughout the whole area, not just in the spots we want to treat. That makes treatment less precise and raises the risk of irritation or pigment changes. That's why we ask you to avoid tanning for several weeks before and after your IPL treatments.

  • Peels make fresh skin more sun-sensitive. A chemical peel removes dull surface cells and encourages renewal underneath. That newer skin is more vulnerable to UV for a while afterward, which can lead to sunburn or, for some people, new pigmentation, the very thing you came in to fix.

In summer, protecting your skin through a full series is hard. Patios, lake weekends, golf, gardening and long evenings outdoors all add up. In fall and winter, your daily sun exposure drops naturally, so your skin can recover and respond the way it should.

Fall is when summer damage finally shows

Sun damage tends to build quietly. Many people notice their spots, redness and uneven tone most in September and October, once the tan fades and the underlying changes are easier to see. That makes fall a natural moment to assess your skin honestly and decide what you want to work on.

Common post-summer concerns we see at our Calgary clinic include:

  • Sunspots, age spots and freckles that have darkened or multiplied (pigmentation)

  • Redness, flushing and broken capillaries, including rosacea

  • Blotchy or uneven tone and overall photodamage

  • Rough texture, dullness and congestion after a summer of sweat, sunscreen and heat (dullness, skin texture)

The series math: start now, glow by spring

Neither treatment is usually a one-and-done. Results build over a series, so the start date matters.

  • Lumecca IPL: many of our clients see a noticeable change after one session, but a series of 3 to 5 treatments spaced a few weeks apart usually gives the best results.

  • AlumierMD chemical peels: we typically recommend a series spaced every 4 to 6 weeks for ongoing improvement, followed by seasonal maintenance.

Start in October and you can comfortably finish a series through the darker months, well before the strong spring and summer sun returns. Wait until April, and you're trying to complete your treatments just as sun exposure ramps back up.

IPL or chemical peel: which is right for you?

Your consultation with our aesthetics team is where we decide this together, but here's a general guide.

Lumecca IPL may be a good fit if your main concerns are:

  • Brown spots, sunspots and freckles on the face, neck, chest or hands

  • Redness, flushing or visible broken capillaries

  • Overall sun damage and uneven tone

Lumecca works best on lighter to medium skin tones. If IPL isn't the safest choice for your skin, we'll recommend another option.

An AlumierMD chemical peel may be a good fit if your main concerns are:

  • Dullness, rough texture or congestion

  • Breakouts or post-acne marks

  • Fine lines and uneven tone

  • Dry, dehydrated skin that needs a reset (very common in Calgary)

We customize every peel to your skin type and concerns, and despite the name, you may not visibly peel at all. How well a peel works isn't measured by how much you flake.

A note on melasma. Melasma (the brown or grey-brown patches often influenced by hormones, heat and sun) behaves differently from ordinary sunspots and can flare with heat-based treatments. We approach it gently and conservatively, often with carefully chosen peels and home care rather than IPL. Learn more on our melasma page.

Many of our clients benefit from both. IPL can target specific spots and redness, while peels refine overall texture and brightness. We'll plan the order and spacing so your skin isn't overwhelmed.

Calgary sun doesn't take the winter off

Fall and winter lower your UV exposure, but they don't eliminate it. Calgary sits at more than 1,000 metres above sea level, we get plenty of bright, clear days, and fresh snow reflects a large share of UV back up at your face. If you're skiing in Kananaskis or spending weekends in the mountains, your exposure can be surprisingly high.

So during your series:

  1. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, including cloudy days, and reapply when you're outdoors.

  2. Pause retinol, exfoliating acids (AHAs and BHAs) and other strong actives before your peel. We'll tell you exactly what to stop and when at your consultation.

  3. Let us know about any upcoming sun holidays when you book your appointment, so we can time your treatments around them.

  4. Keep your skin barrier hydrated. Dry Calgary air plus fresh skin renewal calls for a gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer.

Support the surface from the inside, too

Treatments like IPL and peels improve what you can see. If your redness, breakouts or pigment keep coming back, it's worth asking why. Hormones, gut health, stress and sleep all show up on your skin, and our naturopathic team can help you look at the bigger picture. Read more in Why We Treat Skin From the Inside Out.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time of year to get IPL in Calgary? Fall and winter. Lower sun exposure means less pigment competing with the spots we want to treat and an easier recovery, and starting in October lets you finish a full series before spring.

Can I get a chemical peel in the fall? Yes. Fall is one of the best times for a peel, because the fresh skin a peel reveals is more sensitive to the sun, and our cooler months make it easier to protect.

Do I still need sunscreen in a Calgary winter? Yes. Altitude, clear skies and snow reflection all add to your UV exposure, so daily SPF matters year-round, especially during a treatment series.

How many IPL or peel sessions will I need? Most clients do best with a series: 3 to 5 Lumecca IPL treatments a few weeks apart, or AlumierMD peels every 4 to 6 weeks. We'll recommend a plan at your consultation.
